Jonas Nick

Director of Research, Blockstream

Jonas is the Director of Research at Blockstream. He has made foundational contributions to Bitcoin through co-authoring various Bitcoin Improvement Proposals, including the Taproot upgrade, and is a core contributor to libsecp256k1, the cryptographic library used in Bitcoin Core.
Recently, Jonas has focused on securing Bitcoin against future quantum computing threats. In late 2025, he co-authored the comprehensive paper "Hash-based Signature Schemes for Bitcoin", which laid the groundwork for his co-development of SHRINCS—an optimized hash-based post-quantum signature scheme.
This work led to the first production deployment of post-quantum signature verification on the Liquid Network using Simplicity smart contracts in early 2026.
Alongside his post-quantum research, Jonas continues to advance classical cryptography with academic publications on constant-size aggregate signatures (DahLIAS), advanced applications of Schnorr signatures (MuSig2), and zero-knowledge proofs (Bulletproofs++).
